About this game

Tsurune (弦音, "the sound of the bowstring") is a free, turn-based tactical RPG about a 16-year-old solo archer who walks into the Mossy Reaches with a bow, a very polite way of apologising, and not much else.

The roads are full of goblins, skeletons and worse. A nervous goblin named Goro sells food out of a cart, a goblin shaman sells charms, a goblin with goggles buys your loot, and a very flustered guild receptionist named Mirel finally has an actual adventurer on her books. Take requests, climb the guild ranks from G to SP, and find out what is sitting on the Hollow Throne.

What you do

  • Fight on a grid. Move, then shoot. Line of sight, cover, range, and where you stand are everything. Tsurune is fragile, so kite, use walls, and make every arrow count.
  • Build an archer. A skill tree of ten active skills and four passives (Power Shot, Pierce Shot, Swift Shot, Arc Shot, Double Tap, Rain of Arrows, Spear Shot, Volley Step, Storm Volley and more). Train them through four levels, up to Lv4 with life steal on top.
  • Eat well. Goro's food heals and buffs. Charms from Nuzu change your stats. Gear upgrades from the shop make you tougher.
  • Climb the guild. Earn guild points, pass promotion exams and rise through nine ranks. Take bounties on cleared roads, emergency requests posted by Mirel, and duels with a rival swordsman named Kael.
  • 24 roads and strongholds. Open forests, ruined villages, fortified keeps with several stages, rescue runs against a timer, ambushes and reinforcements. Enemies heal, snipe, shield, siege and run.
  • After rank SP: The Ascent. A much harder bonus climb through terraced ruins and forest, against fire, stone, wind and frost elementals, with outdoor rest stops, a packed food bag and no way back to camp until the top.

Features

  • 24 handcrafted combat maps (some stronghold maps with several stages, some scrolling) and a four-zone bonus campaign
  • Turn-based tactical combat with cover, line of sight, status effects and eight enemy behaviours
  • Camp with four shopkeepers, a guild with ranks and exams, camp events and a rival
  • Skill tree with levels, a charm system, food and gear upgrades
  • Full anime story art, pixel-art battlefields, ambient weather and music
  • Saves automatically in your browser

How to play

  • Click a blue tile to move, click a red enemy to shoot.
  • Pick a skill on the skill bar or press 1 to 9 (0 for the tenth). Hover a skill to see its range.
  • Space skips your move or ends your action. Esc opens the pause menu (volume, weather effects, retreat).
  • Eating food in a fight takes your turn.
  • Your progress is saved in this browser. Clearing your browser data erases it, and it does not follow you between browsers or devices.

Tips for browser play

  • Press the fullscreen button for the best view. Chrome, Edge and Firefox on a desktop work best.
  • The first load downloads about 65 MB (music and art), so give it a moment. Click once on the title screen to start the audio.

Feedback wanted
This is an early public version and I would love to hear how it plays: is the early game too easy or too hard, are the skills fun, does anything confuse you? Please leave a comment, even a short one.
