About this game

A small spirit of light drifts through a grey, forgotten world. Wherever it passes, color returns.

IRO (色, "color") is a gentle exploration game with no combat, no timer and no way to fail. You are a tiny spirit. Wander through a quiet forest, a hamlet beside a stream, a market town and the small houses within it, and watch grey fade to warmth around you. Some places want you to stop and linger. Finish a place, and the world answers: leaves stir, smoke rises, lamps glow.

Before you begin, you will meet a line of old Japanese poetry or proverb about journeys, to set the mood.

What you will find

  • A hand-built world of forest paths, a lake, a waterfall and stream, a hamlet and a market town
  • Four little house interiors to wander into: a living room, a tavern, a kitchen, a bedroom
  • Four seasons, each with its own colors and weather: spring, summer, autumn (falling leaves) and winter (snow)
  • A soft, changing soundtrack that moves from sparse and distant to warm and close as the world comes back
  • Places to discover off the road, for the curious
  • About half an hour of play, unhurried and in your own order

How to play

  • Move: W A S D or the arrow keys
  • Dash: Shift
  • Wander anywhere / choose a season / credits: M or Tab (opens a small menu)
  • Stand on glowing rings to bring a place back to life, step through doors to go inside, and just explore. Colors you restore stay restored.

Good to know

  • It runs in your browser. If sound does not start, click the game once and press a key.
  • Your chosen season is remembered between visits.
